Forest fires is a big issue in Nepal. A reliable and timely fire detection and monitoring system is an important component of forest fire management. In view of their large-area repetitive coverage, satellite data are useful for near real-time fire detection, monitoring, and burnt area assessment. Further, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectro-radiometer (MODIS) sensors on board Terra and Aqua satellites of National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) are already used extensively for the purpose across the globe. This technology has been used to detect and monitor forest fire in Nepal and to disseminate this information to wide range of people this "Online Web Mapping Application" has been developed.
The web tool provides historical forest fire information as well as real-time fire incident. Furthermore, this tool also sends this information via SMS & Email to divisional and sub-divisional forest officers and other relevant stakeholders. Responsible authorities operate the mechanism required for controlling fire based on the information received. This web tool provides another useful functionality that will help enter and maintain the data on damage due to forest fires e.g. loss of lives and assets due to forest fires.
ICIMOD, in close collaboration with the Department of Forests & Soil Conservation (DoFSC) and Ministry Forest & Environment (MoFE), Government of Nepal has jointly developed this "Online Web Mapping Application".
